April 18 - the International Day for the Preservation of Cultural Monuments

On April 18, we celebrate the International Day for the Preservation of Cultural Monuments. This day has been celebrated since 1984 and draws attention to our national heritage and its preservation. Today we pay attention to what was created before us and what we leave behind.

Protecting our cultural heritage, directing our attention and efforts in this direction, we take care of our own national identity and past. We show that we understand the importance of our history and the significance of what was built before us.

Bulgaria has many monuments to be proud of, and seven of them are included in the UNESCO List of Cultural and Natural Heritage. These are the Boyan church, the Madar horseman, the Thracian tomb in Kazanlak, the rock churches of the village of Ivanovo (Rusen region), Ancient Nessebar, the Rila monastery, the Thracian tomb in the village of Sveshtari (Razgrad region). The list also includes two natural sites – Pirin National Park and Srebarna Biosphere Reserve.

We can also boast of our rich intangible heritage such as the Chiprov carpets, Nestinar, the “Surva” custom, the Bistry grandmothers, the Koprivshtitsa Folk Art Festival, which are also included in the list.
